Personal Safety and Security – What Would You Have Given to Avoid the Loss?

When it comes to personal safety and security, we have many choices to make. We can take:

  • precautions and assure our safety
  • chances and perhaps come out lucky
  • undue risks and possibly have serious regrets

Each of these options have been exercised by all of us at one time or another. We count on ourselves to make these decisions every day. How do we make decisions as to which path we’ll take? We need to understand how to do it well if we’re going to stay safe. For each of us the answer may be different, but many times the right answer can be found simply by examining our values.

It’s what we value that’s important, and that’s how we make most of our decisions. The impatient value time. Our elders value health and longevity. Those willing to pay $2 for a soft drink at a vending machines at a rest stop value convenience. These are a sampling of our values, and each causes us to make judgments as to what we’re going to do in terms of personal safety, financial security and other risk versus gain propositions.

Whenever you find yourself wondering whether personal safety and security measures are worthwhile, just imagine the following:

What I feared could go wrong indeed did go wrong, and now I’m faced with the consequences. I’ve incurred a cost. How could I have done this differently to avoid the problems I’m now saddled with? Knowing the mess I’m in now, and understanding that I can turn back the hands of time, what value do I see in the precautionary measures now?

They key is to imagine yourself already in the undesirable situation and then ask yourself what it would be worth to have avoided the mess in the first place. The “how much” part is the value, and imagining yourself already in the undesirable situation helps us place proper value on the precautionary measures. Otherwise, we’re likely just kidding ourselves with “it’ll never happen to me” thinking.

Looking back as if the adverse event has already taken place is a good way to help us assign realistic values to issues of personal safety and security. Only when we have a realistic value assigned can we make good decisions about the price of safety and security with respect to our:

  • convenience
  • money
  • time
  • pride

Many people say that Murphy is everywhere. As associate of mine used to say, “When you think there won’t be any problems, that’s when you have problems.” And, I like to think that at one time or another, we are “the other guy” that things are always happening to, so it pays to take personal safety and security seriously.

Simply think of the reasonably likely consequences, and ask yourself what it would be worth to you to avoid them. That should help you assign reasonable value to measures that are intended to help ensure your safety and security.

Personal Safety Training For One and All

There are many people who pay importance to their studies, jobs, and career but often forget to take care of themselves. The food that you eat, the way you live are extremely important. Hygiene of the body is extremely important and essential. If you are clean, then you are healthy. What’s more, you can be truly wealthy only and only if you are healthy. Thus it is extremely important to be hygienic. There are several things to consider when you speak about hygiene. Diet, self awareness, clothing all makes up aspects of hygiene. Your physical health may be affected by your oral health. If you practice safety training, you are less likely to get engrossed in the labyrinth of disease and infections.

It is extremely important to wear fresh, new clothes everyday as it is extremely essential to be hygienic. This statement carries even more weight in summer, when you sweat a lot. You can injure your body by wearing the wrong clothes, a fact I bet you did not know. You need to know about the harm that potentially may be caused by following unhygienic habits, as not everyone can afford to employ a safety trainer. Did you know that your body may be prone to infections if the air flow of the fabric that you are wearing is not proper? Did you know that you are increasing the potential of injury by shoes that do not offer support adequately? There are some safety training materials and your doctor will be able to instruct you about those!

The food and drink that is consumed and physical exercise affects the intensity of personal training that you undergo. There are some foods that harm your body in a way that you may not be even aware of. Safety training will again help you stay away from food and drink that are detrimental in the long run. This is even more important as the food does not show potential threat. There are a few exercises which are harmful as well. Exercises like weight lifting and boxing increase the chance of getting injured. You should demand for a safety training brochure if you are a beginner. You can become an expert only if you ask questions.

There are many factors that are encompassed in self awareness. Your personal safety is influenced by your metal health. If you suffer from a mental illness, you need to look after yourself. Relationships with family/friends also influence mental health. Self aware ness can teach you a lot of things in life, so long as personal safety training is concerned.

You can even get injured due to the lack of sleep. Sleeping will definitely have an effect on mental and physical health. Your body won’t function properly if it does not get an adequate amount of sleep.

What Parents Should Tell Their Kids About Personal Safety

Children are not spared from the vicious acts of other people. There are about 2,300 children who go missing each day, as reported by the FBI. The statistics of kids being abducted is really alarming and parents should take an active participation to stop such incidence. Every parent cares so much about his child more than his own life. Most parents would refer their kids as the precious gem and having your child abducted is the most terrifying thing that could ever happen to you. Thus, as early as now you’ve got to do something to solve this concern. Child psychology experts suggest you to start briefing your kids about their personal safety soon as they hit the age of 3 or 4. This is the right time that kids may already have a good grasp with matters concerning safety and security.

Keep Communication Lines Open
Open communication plays a significant role in the process of telling your kids about personal safety. As a parent, you should be able to effectively communicate with them and you must also see to it that in turn they can openly communicate to you. You can always remind them to tell you whatever their concerns are, especially those things that are making them uncomfortable.

Discuss the Ploys of Strangers
The majority of children have a trusting nature and since their trust can easily be gained aggressors tend to take advantage of it. You should educate your kids about the nature of a stranger and that being a person that you and even other family strangers don’t know. Better yet, you can tell them not to be too friendly with strangers. Aside from that, you can also teach them the possible ploys of strangers who may have bad intentions in them and these usually include offering things to them (especially candies and chocolates), asking for directions and other schemes just to gain the attention of the child. Whatever their tricks are, you should tell your child to say NO to them.

Holler In Case of Emergency
When someone is trying to hurt them or they think is acting suspiciously, they should know exactly what to do which include running while shouting for help to a nearby public place. You should also orient your kids on how to dial 911. Apart from that, you should also take collect calls so as your kids can reach you in times of emergency.

Safety Gadgets
With a great technology that we have these days, there’s not a single reason for you not to avail of it. There are personal safety equipment that you can use to arm your kids with such as a taser gun, stun gun and many others. You just have to properly instruct them on how to use these things and that these should only be used in emergency situations, not to poke and pull a prank on other kids.

These are just a few of the personal safety tips that you should discuss with your kids. There’s over a dozen that you can find on the net.
